Ganga Dussehra
According to the Hindu calendar, Ganga Dussehra is celebrated every year on the Shukla Paksha Dashami of the Jyeshtha month. This sacred day marks the descent of Maa Ganga from heaven to Earth. It is believed that the holy river Ganga was brought to Earth by the intense penance and devotion of King Bhagirath to liberate his ancestors and purify the souls of humanity. Maa Ganga is worshipped as the divine mother who cleanses all sins and grants liberation (moksha).
According to mythology, King Bhagirath performed severe tapasya to bring the river Ganga down from heaven to Earth so that the ashes of his ancestors could be purified. Lord Shiva, to control the immense force of Ganga, received her in his matted locks and gently released her flow onto Earth. This divine descent is celebrated as Ganga Dussehra.
This festival is celebrated with great devotion across India, especially in places like Haridwar, Varanasi, Prayagraj, and Rishikesh. On this day, devotees take a holy dip in the river Ganga, offer prayers, perform aarti, and donate food and clothes to the needy. It is believed that bathing in Maa Ganga on this day washes away ten types of sins and brings spiritual upliftment and peace.
Many people wonder why Ganga Dussehra is considered so special. It is believed that on this day, the divine energy of Maa Ganga is at its peak, and her waters become especially purifying. Devotees also perform charity, pitru tarpan, and deep daan on the banks of the Ganga to honor their ancestors and seek blessings for prosperity and well-being.
According to scriptures, Ganga is not just a river but a divine goddess who resides on Earth for the welfare of humanity. Therefore, remembering Maa Ganga, offering prayers, and serving her waters with devotion on Ganga Dussehra is considered highly auspicious and spiritually rewarding.
